The Ultimate 3-Day 4×4 Camping Adventure from Johannesburg to Drakensberg

The Ultimate 3-Day 4×4 Camping Adventure from Johannesburg to Drakensberg

Everything you need to know for the perfect Joburg to Drakensberg 4×4 camping trip

Why This Route?

The Johannesburg to Drakensberg route is one of the most rewarding 4×4 camping
adventures in southern Africa. Starting from South Africa\’s largest city, you will
drive south through the golden highveld into KwaZulu-Natal, climbing into one of
the continent\’s most dramatic mountain landscapes — the UNESCO World Heritage-listed
uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park.

This route combines towering basalt escarpments, ancient San rock art, world-class
hiking trails and unforgettable mountain camping experiences. Unlike many South African
adventure routes, the Drakensberg offers something rare — true wilderness within just
3.5 hours of Johannesburg, making it the perfect long-weekend escape for city dwellers.

The entire route covers approximately 650 km over 3 days and suits 4×4 drivers of
all experience levels. The approach roads into the berg require high clearance and
4×4 capability after rain, but the reward is campsites and viewpoints that ordinary
vehicles simply cannot reach.
