The Johannesburg to Kalahari Desert route via Upington and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is one of the most remote and rewarding 4×4 camping adventures in all of southern Africa. Starting from South Africa\’s largest city you will drive west through the Northern Cape\’s vast semi-arid plains, past the Orange River town of Upington, and deep into Africa\’s greatest desert wilderness — the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
This route delivers something no other South African adventure can match — absolute solitude. Infinite red dunes, ancient camelthorn trees, black-maned lions lounging in dry riverbeds and cheetahs sprinting across open salt pans. The Kalahari is raw, unfiltered Africa. Best of all it is completely malaria-free, making it a safe and accessible desert safari for the whole family.
The entire route covers approximately 1,800 km over 4 days. The distances are long but the roads are good and the reward is one of the least-crowded, most visually dramatic national parks on the continent. Accommodation books out up to a year in advance — plan early.

Day by Day Itinerary
🗓 Day 1 — Johannesburg to Upington
Leave Johannesburg early on the N14 heading northwest through Vryburg and Kuruman. The landscape gradually shifts from highveld grassland to classic Northern Cape Kalahari scrub. Overnight in Upington — the last major supply stop before the desert. Stock up on food, fuel and cash.

🗓 Day 2 — Upington to Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (Twee Rivieren)
Morning fuel stop in Upington then head north on the R360. The red dunes begin to appear as you approach the park boundary. Enter through Twee Rivieren gate and check in at the main rest camp. Afternoon game drive along the Auob River road — prime lion and cheetah territory.

🗓 Day 3 — Full Day in the Kalahari
Full day exploring the park. Morning drive north to Nossob Camp along the dry Nossob riverbed watching waterholes for predators. Tackle the Leeudril 4×4 Dune Loop — a dedicated off-road trail through classic Kalahari red dune country. Sundowner braai at camp under a sky
