The Ultimate 4-Day 4×4 Adventure from Johannesburg to the Kingdom of Lesotho

The Ultimate 4-Day 4×4 Adventure
from Johannesburg to the
Kingdom of Lesotho

Everything you need to know for the perfect Joburg to Lesotho 4×4 adventure — the Roof of Africa awaits

Why This Route?

The Johannesburg to Lesotho route via the Sani Pass is one of the most dramatic and culturally rich 4×4 adventures in all of southern Africa. Starting from South Africa\’s largest city you will drive south through the KwaZulu-Natal midlands into the shadow of the Drakensberg mountains, before ascending one of the continent\’s most legendary mountain passes into the only country in the world entirely above 1,000 metres — the Kingdom of Lesotho.

This route offers something completely unique. Lesotho is not a game reserve or a beach destination — it is a high-altitude mountain kingdom where Basotho horsemen still ride between stone villages, where ancient rock art lines remote cave walls, where you can ski in Africa, and where the roads are so remote and demanding that only a 4×4 can reach them. The famous Sani Pass climbs 1,000 metres in just 8 kilometres of steep gravel switchbacks — one of the most exhilarating drives on the continent.

The entire route covers approximately 1,400 km over 4 days including a circular loop through Lesotho\’s highland interior. A valid passport is required for both border crossings. True 4×4 capability with low-range gearing is essential — this is not a route for high-clearance SUVs alone.
