The Ultimate 5-Day 4×4 Camping Adventure from Johannesburg to Cape Town via the Garden Route

Everything you need to know for the perfect Joburg to Cape Town Garden Route 4×4 camping trip

Why This Route?

The Johannesburg to Cape Town route via the Garden Route is without doubt the greatest road trip in southern Africa. Starting from South Africa\’s largest city you will drive south through the Eastern Cape into a world of ancient forests, dramatic Indian Ocean coastline, elephant-filled national parks and some of the most spectacular mountain passes on the continent — before arriving at the iconic foot of Table Mountain.

This route combines the best of everything South Africa has to offer — Big 5 game drives at Addo Elephant Park, ancient yellowwood forests in Tsitsikamma, the famous Bloukrans Bungee Bridge, the turquoise Knysna Lagoon and the legendary Chapman\’s Peak Drive into Cape Town. Best of all it is completely malaria-free from start to finish, making it the ideal 4×4 adventure for the whole family.

The entire route covers approximately 1,800 km over 5 days through three provinces — Gauteng, Eastern Cape and Western Cape. A 4×4 or high-clearance vehicle is recommended for the off-road forest and coastal trails along the way, and unlocks experiences that standard hire cars simply cannot access.
